SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is the tactics used to improve the online visibility of a website. SEO is done so that a website will receive more organic traffic on the web. Organic traffic is the traffic your website gets from search engines because your website. Organic traffic is cheap and it has been described as the best and most profitable type of web traffic.
Once your website appears in the first page of search engines like Google, you get more traffic and you can convert the visitors who view your website into customers. Ideally, more visitors to your website lead to more profit, if you can efficiently convert the visitors to buying customers.
The process of SEO is very simple. Once you post a new content or article on your website, the search engines crawl the website, after crawling, the content is indexed. Indexation means that the search engines have added your content to their library or database of contents. Once indexation is done, the search engines will use their algorithm to place you in a position in their web results. If you want good prominence or good ranking in search results, you must follow SEO best practices.
Strategies used for SEO
There are two broad strategies used for SEO namely white hat SEO and black hat SEO. The former is the best and I strongly advise this, it takes time but it will make your website rank for a long time on search engines.
Black hat SEO means using methods not approved by search engines to get an unfair advantage. You will eventually get caught by the search engines and your website will lose all its rankings. It is the lazy man way of achieving short lived result. Let us discuss the two strategies in detail now.
White Hat SEO
White hat SEO is the adoption of search engine’s approved best practices to rank your website in search result. Examples of white hat SEO strategies include:
- Writing plagiarism free content or articles, the articles should be highly informative and engaging
- Using relevant keywords in your title tags and other tags
- Good grammatical structure, no grammatical errors and usage of short sentences
- Using only copyright free images with good labeling
- No duplicate content on your website
Black Hat SEO
This is a strategy used by website owners that want to achieve quick result. All search engines do not approve this strategy and in most cases, you will lose all your rankings within a very short time. If you are a long term targeted entrepreneur, you should run away from this strategy.
As a matter of fact, all website owners should avoid black hat SEO strategy. Search engines like Google constantly update their algorithm in order to remove from their search results any website that uses black hat strategies.
Some of the black hat strategies used by website owners include:
- Buying baclinks from link farms, this is the easiest way to get your website banned from search engines’ search list
- Using Private Blog Network (PBN)
- Duplicate content
- Keyword stuffing
- Cloaking and re-directing to irrelevant websites
- Plagiarism etc
There are also two SEO techniques you can use to improve your SEO ranking in search results. I will discuss about the factors Google uses to rank websites.
The content or articles you put on your website must be highly informative and engaging. The contents must answer people’s search queries. You should not put duplicate contents on your website. Good grammatical structure should be used.
Content Main Heading
Your blog or article main heading or title should be attractive. Your targeted keyword should appear in your H1 tag or main heading. The main heading should not have more than 65 characters. Do not stuff the H1 tag several times with your keyword.
Your targeted keyword should appear in the permalink. Do not use permalinks with all manners of symbols and special characters. Make the permalink clean with only your keyword and other needed words.
In the old times, people can stuff their articles or blog post with their keywords. However, with the new updates of Google algorithm. Stuffing of keywords does not work again; in fact you will get your website punished for doing it.
Your keyword density should not be more than 1.5%. You must make your blog post or article sound natural, do not put keywords where they are not needed.
Your heading tags like H1, H2, H3 and H4 (if needed) should have your keyword. However, this is not necessary for H3 and H4 if you do not have any reason to put the keywords.
Images used on your blog articles should have the keyword as heading and also in the ‘alt text’. This makes the article looks more focused in the eyes of Google algorithm.
Your images should also load at good speed; it is a good strategy to use image compression plugins on wordpress to reduce the size of your images. When your website loads at a good speed, Google rewards you with higher ranking. Poorly compressed images or large images can reduce the speed of your website.
Though Google does not use this as one of its ranking factors, other search engines like Bing do. You may use your targeted keyword in the Meta description.
Length of Post
Most of the articles that appear on page 1 on Google have more than 1,500 words. Some of them even have more than 3,000 words. Endeavour to write posts that have more than 800 words. Long articles make your website rank for your targeted keywords and other keywords you never imagined.
Do not write jargons just because you want to have a long article. You must write well researched and engaging blog posts.
You should link to other relevant posts on your website from your current post. That is, all posts or articles must link to other related posts on your website. Internal linking makes visitors to your website stay longer and it also passes link juice to other pages.
It is advisable you link out to authoritative websites. This factor is touted as one of Google’s ranking factors.
Off-page SEO is how to improve the ranking of your website posts on search results using techniques other than those related to the website contents.
The top off-page SEO strategies are:
Getting good backlinks is the most important factor in Google ranking. You should write very informative and engaging content, with this, other websites will be happy to link back to you. Do not buy spammy links as this is counter-productive.
Social Media Marketing
Social signal is one of Google’s most important ranking factors. You should have accounts with all major social media platforms and market your website’s contents vigorously there.
